How Do Olympic Athletes Keep Getting Better?

Relay raceLast August we all watched in awe at the XXXI Olympiad in Rio. As Katie Ledecky once again broke the world record for the 800 meter freestyle, we couldn’t help but wonder: how do we keep getting faster? 100 years ago, the world record for women’s 800 meter freestyle was 13 minutes. Last August, Katie Ledecky shaved about 5 minutes off of that time.

In his TED talk, David Epstein shed a lot of light on this phenomenon. He argued that it’s not humans that are evolving. Rather, it’s the games themselves.

Huge Leaps Forward

Epstein shares a graph that illustrates huge leaps and bounds in swim times throughout the years. He correlated those to new developments in methodology, tech, and engineering. For example, when the flip turn was incorporated into swim races, it cut off a significant amount of time in the world record. Additionally, new developments in swimwear allow swimmers to cut through the water and move more effectively.

Wider Access Makes the Field More Competitive

One major reason for the growth and development of athletes in general is the way that access to the sporting world has grown hugely in the last hundred years. Today, athletes are professionals, not amateurs who train in their free time. Today, access to athletics is available for more women, for more races, and for more socioeconomic groups. Between that and the growing population, we have a much larger group from which to choose our best and brightest athletes. After all, who’s better: the best of 100 people, or the best of 5,000?

The Rio games this year illustrated this development dramatically with our American women. They absolutely dominated, and many attribute that to the wider access that women have to sports over other countries and locations.

Sports Psychology Teaches Us To Test the Boundaries

The final big reason for the constant improvement of our athletes is harder to put your finger on. It has to do with the mental limitations that we put on ourselves. This was most dramatically and memorably illustrated by the shattering of the four minute mile. In 1945, the world record for running a mile was held by Gunder Hagg, who completed it in 4 minutes and 1.3 seconds. For almost 10 years, it was believed that humans had gone as far as they could go; there was no way to conquer a mile in less than four minutes.

It could be due to this psychological barrier that so many people made it their goal to defeat the four minute mile. In 1954, Roger Bannister completed a mile in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. Only two months later, another athlete broke this barrier, Australian John Landy. Since then, the four minute mile is the standard for world-class runners, although it’s left the common vernacular since sports shifted to the metric system.

However, this incident illustrates an interesting point: sometimes, the biggest barrier to achievement is psychological. Sports psychologists work with athletes to help them push the boundaries of the human body. Any marathon runner will say that the race is just as much a mental feat as a physical one.

Exercise Science

For those fascinated (as we are) with the amazing feats of the human body, as demonstrated through Olympic athleticism, Exercise Science may be an optimal field of study to pursue.  To get you on the right track, Carone Learning’s Exercise Science course covers aspects from the physiology of body systems  and analyzing biomechanics to sports psychology and nutrition.  Learn more today!

Meet Student of the Week Hayley L.!

Let us introduce you to our student of the week, Hayley L.!

Hayley has recently finished her nurition course, she was able to implement some great changes throughout her time in the course. Below is her experience with the course and her changes.

What do you like most about your Carone Learning course?

What I liked most about my Carone Learning course was how I could relate the things I was learning to real life situations and, in some cases, my own life.

What have you learned in your Carone Learning course that will most help you in your life?

What I learned that will most help me in my life is the role that nutrition plays in my life. Learning this has influenced my choice in food and has helped me improve how I eat.

How has your Carone Learning course helped you improve your level of health or fitness?

The nutrition course I took has helped me improve my level of health because it has helped me improve my eating habits. I’ve eaten so much better since learned how to plan my meals and choose healthy foods.

How has your cFitness Academy instructor helped you with your course or your goals?

My instructor has helped me with my course goals by being there to help any time that I needed it and by giving feedback on everything I did.

Why did you sign up for a course through cFitness Academy, and how has taking this course online been beneficial?

I signed up for a course through cFitness Academy because I thought it would be the best option to learn more about health and fitness. Taking the course online has been beneficial because I could work on it whenever and I could work at my own pace.

Please share any other comments you have about cFitness Academy or your Carone Learning course.

cFitness has allowed me to work through health at a pace that fits my schedule. I am being more challenged and learning some great self studying skills because of online health.

Here’s what Kristen’s teacher had to say about her:

“Demonstrated a solid understanding of content (97% on Final). Also, showed a desire to apply the new information into her real life.”

In Hayley’s nutrition class she has been implementing what she’s learned about nutrition into her daily diet, she wrote about her experience.

REFLECTION DIARY: November 19, 2016 My grandma and I have been doing really well with our meal planning. The things I’ve learned from this class has helped a lot with that. I feel so much better with myself. I’m eating more, so I’m not hungry as much. But the things I’ve been eating are healthy, so not only have I been feeling more full, I have been feeling more energized. The things I have to do at work make me more active. I have to walk around a lot; I am on my feet the entire time I’m there. I also have to lift various things and sometimes move shelves. The things I have to do aren’t much, but they’re more physically active things than the things I would do normally. When I first started, I would get so tired with almost all of my tasks. Not only was I tired because I was working after school, but I was tired because I wasn’t that used to having to move around so much. Now the only reason I get tired is because I’m working after school. I’m pretty much used to the physical aspects of my job now, and that makes me feel pretty happy.

Just as all of our students are unique, we think Hayley is pretty great and we’re proud to have her in class! Thanks, Hayley!

PE for Students with Physical Limitations

online student Many traditional schools offer waivers in PE so that students with physical limitations will not have to take PE courses.  However, that is really doing a dis-service to the student.  Rather than opting out of PE, students should still have the opportunity to learn about health and fitness principles and participate in physical activity (if able) at their own pace and level.  Schools should offer these students an alternate option.

Online education is an excellent option for students with physical limitations because course requirements can easily be adapted to meet a student’s abilities. Students will still learn vital fitness principles, and they can work on progressing in areas where they are able. Carone Learning offers an adaptive PE course specifically for students with limitations, and we can also adapt the requirements of many of our online courses to meet special needs. What Does a Fully-Rounded Education Look Like?

StudentAn effective education is so much more than grammar and algebra. Education is meant to prepare children for the future challenges that they’ll confront in their lives. In such a rapidly-shifting world, it can be hard to know exactly what will be useful to students in the future. Children need to be flexible, lifelong learners. That’s why modern educators are calling for a shift that in our system that educates the whole child. Continue reading “What Does a Fully-Rounded Education Look Like?”

What have you learned in your Carone Learning course that will most help you in your life?

The Carone Learning course taught me how to manage my daily personal life and exercise, and how to create my own workout plan. Along with teaching me the importance of how to develop a daily healthy life.

How has your Carone Learning course helped you improve your level of health or fitness?

During the Carone Leaning course my level of health and fitness have both improved tremendously! As I am approaching the end of my semester, I have lost 20 pounds due to my weekly fitness routine that I developed for my course! It is life changing.

How has your cFitness Academy instructor helped you with your course or your goals?

My cFitness Academy instructor was absolutely wonderful. I could not have asked for a better instructor. She helped me with assignments as well as responded to my emails within a couple hours. She was also understanding and would help me manage my time with my personal life, school life, and my class on Carone Fitness. If I would not be on my class for a few days, she always checked up on me through email and would keep me on task.

Why did you sign up for a course through cFitness Academy, and how has taking this course online been beneficial?

I signed up for this course through my school counselors, because I am graduating a year early and could not fit physical education into my schedule which is needed to graduate.

Please share any other comments you have about cFitness Academy or your Carone Learning course.

I have taken multiple classes online, not just physical education but other subjects, and Carone Learning was my hands-down favorite. I wish they had more subjects available! I highly recommend Carone Learning to anybody!

Here’s what Brooke’s teacher had to say about her:

“Her work has been high quality all semester long, and she even got ahead with most of the work early on. Her communication with me has been consistent and she asks questions when needed. I’ve also been delighted with her personal fitness and health goals that she’s been working on over the semester and am excited about the progress she’s made.”

In Brooke’s Group Sports class she reflected on the goals she set at the beginning of the class, here is one of her goals and her reflection on it:

  • Goal #3: Adapt to a daily workout routine.
In the class I had to create many different workouts to meet the weekly requirements. Although, I went beyond with the requirements, I developed a daily exercise workout that I can follow through with and will fit perfectly with my schedule. The past few weeks, I have adapted to one specific routine which I am going to stick to but I’ll always be pushing myself to be better.

Just as all of our students are unique, we think Brooke is pretty great and we’re proud to have her in class! Thanks, Brooke!
